Germán Villarroel

Head of Hinicio Chile

Germán Villarroel is a Mechanical Engineer from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile with extensive experience in Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Systems focusing on Techno-Economic Analysis, Market Studies, Value Chain Analysis, and early engineering studies.

During 2013 and 2015 he was part of Crystal Lagoons’ R&D team, an innovative firm that patented large-scale closed-loop water treatment technology for the Industry. From 2016 to 2017 he joined Valhalla, an energy start-up that developed an innovative “Seawater Pump Storage” project integrated with a PV plant capable of generating 24/7 renewable energy. Before joining Hinicio he worked as a Consultant Manager at Engie Impact (former Tractebel’s Smart Energy Systems), having participated in more than 15 energy transition projects for Industries both nationally and internationally. In particular, hydrogen systems for the energy, industrial, and transport sectors, Green Ammonia synthesis based on renewables, Decarbonization Roadmaps for Territories and Industries, Energy Storage, and green mobility.

In 2018 Germán founded the Chilean Hydrogen Association, a non-profit organization that aims at accelerating the Energy Transition by promoting Hydrogen and Fuel Cell technologies in Chile. He speaks Spanish and English fluently.
