Creating an Enabling Regulatory Framework for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin in Europe
The EU Hydrogen Strategy and the EU Strategy for Energy System integration recognise the key role of hydrogen and derived renewable and low carbon gases, liquids, and chemical feedstocks in decarbonising hard to abate sectors, such as heavy industry as well as transport. Building on these strategies, the revision of the RED II Directive aims at strengthening the enabling framework for renewable and low-carbon fuels, including the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs). Yet, there is a number of barriers to uptake of RFNBOs and regulatory uncertainties both at the European and at the Member State level that project developers are currently facing.
