Potential pilot projects for the production and adoption of renewable hydrogen in Costa Rica

Context

Hinicio mapped and evaluated pilot projects for the adoption of renewable hydrogen in Costa Rica and conducted a prefeasibility study (PFS) for the most actionable project in the short term.

Proyect Overview

Description

The project involved a comprehensive pilot screening process, identifying under-development projects in Costa Rica through desk research and interviews with cross-sectoral stakeholders, including public entities, associations, cooperation agencies, and multilateral banks. These projects were evaluated and prioritized through two screening stages based on key dimensions aligned with the consultancy’s goals. The prefeasibility study included collaborating with the project developer to define the project concept and key sensitivities, preparing preliminary engineering deliverables (such as CBS, PFD, BFD, and H&M Balance), and proposing a suitable project finance structure applicable to similar initiatives. Various scenarios were analyzed alongside an assessment of the regulatory framework and national workforce, identifying potential gaps that could impact the project’s implementation.
