The position paper by EASE (European Association for Storage of Energy) on Sectoral Integration through Power-to-Gas (PtG) and Power-to-Liquid ( PtL) refers to the EU-project CertifHy ‘Developing a European Framework for the generation of guarantees of origin for green hydrogen’, led by HINICIO with ECN, LBST and TÜV SÜD. EASE emphasises the importance of both PtG and PtL for producing Green Hydrogen to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by substituting energy from fossil sources. Furthermore, PtG and PtL provide flexibility to the electricity grid and thereby support the integration of intermittent renewable generation. In order for PtG and PTL to be available for large scale applications by 2030, progress needs to be made in several areas such as upscaling of PtG and PtL installations, increasing of efficiencies, reducing production costs and overcoming market barriers. To overcome these hurdles EASE recommends as a first step to develop a certification system for production pathways of Green Hydrogen that could be designed based on the CertifHy recommendations. Further recommendations are developing comprehensive and fair life cycle assessment methodologies, promoting sectoral integration, developing a coherent remuneration system, creating a playfield for Green Hydrogen and reducing the economic gap.
